Senior Day gives you a 10 - 15% Discount
Most of the major Grocery Food chains offer a day for seniors to get an extra 10% or 15% discount off your grocery bill. The day is usually the first Tuesday or Wednesday of the month. Some chains will offer it more than once, so ask where you do shopping what day your store offers the Seniors Discount. The discount doesn't extend to tobacco or alcohol products, but if you wait to buy your meat and other big ticket items, it's a huge saving for the snowbird.
Coupon Deals and Flyers
Coupons are a huge way to save money. If you couple your coupons with "Seniors Day" and the stores might even offer Double or Triple Coupon Days, it makes the coupon even more valuable. Don't overlook the "Specials Board" when you enter into the grocery store either. They often have extra deals for the weary shopper.
Costco in your Area?
Costco has a unique pricing mechanism. The last two digits of a Costco price tags tells you the consumer quite a bit.
Here's a quick list to help you save money:
* .99 Regular Priced Items
* .79, .49 & .89 are Special Purchase Items (which might not be carried again - So if you want it, get it now)
* 88 or .00 is a Manager's Special and might be in only the particular store you are in at the time
* .97 is the best two digits to seek out on your trip. This is an item which is being cleared. If the item also has an "*" in the top right corner of the page, then it will not be restocked.
Payment Update - Shopping at Costco U.S.
Costco Canada has sent a letter out to it's Canadian Customers informing them that Costco in the U.S. has chosen VISA as their credit card partner in the U.S. not Mastercard like Canada. Canadian Costco credit/membership Mastercards can be used as their Membership Card but are NOT accepted at U.S. Costco stores for payment. Only Visa, Debit/ATM cards, Costco Cash Cards and cash.
If you are using a Canadian Credit card and they ask for a Zipcode for a security check, what do you do?
Now this trick doesn't work all the time, but if you take the numbers out of your postal code, and add two zeroes to the end of it, you get a five digit code. If you use the picture as an example the code you would enter would be 10600. This is particularly beneficial to know when you are paying at the pump, as it will save you an annoying trip inside the station to have them set up the pump for you.
Get Loyalty Cards and Collect Points
There is a huge selection of apps for your smart phone which will allow you to have the loyalty cards for where you shop at home and where you shop while you are snow birding. You might as well collect the points while you are away, even if the store is only available to you away home. By having the loyalty card set up you will be notified to special bonuses and coupons, which will also save you some money.
TIP: If you want to make more points faster, pool them with friends. I collect one set, and a friend collects the other. Then we both benefit by collecting the most points in a short period of time.
